Senior Checkout Supervisor

We are looking for a Senior Checkout Supervisor to lead the Checkout team of our small but busy supermarket.

At New World Karori, our primary focus is on our customers receiving the best possible shopping experience.  Your role as Senior Checkout Supervisor directly impacts on the delivery of this service.
You will report directly to the Grocery Manager, and have a number of checkout supervisors and grocery/checkout assistants reporting to you.

This role suits somebody with previous Supermarket Checkout experience, with a demonstrated ability to lead a team.
You will work closely with the Grocery Manager, but be expected to show a fair degree of autonomy in setting and achieving your responsibilities and goals.  You must have a lot of energy and enthusiasm for delivering consistently great customer service, and be willing and able to elicit great customer service from your team.  You won’t be afraid to confront issues head on, striving to find the best resolutions for all involved, and be willing to take personal responsibility for driving the department forward.  Most of all you will be a hands-on leader, just as happy to operate a checkout as do a 6 monthly performance review.

You will be responsible for:

  • Managing customer flow at checkouts, utilising staff to maximise customer through put, while also ensuring staff are used to their fullest potential.

  • Directly resolving customer grievances, finding the “win” in each situation.

  • Monitoring day-to-day staff productivity, and compliance with store operation procedures, and Food Safety and Health and Safety, identifying where issues are occurring and working with operators to address those issues.

  • Working with new and existing staff to maximise their potential.

  • Analysing scan rates, ensuring operators are physically meeting KPIs.

  • Monitoring and working with operators that require upskilling, to achieve required KPIs.

  • Escalating to, and assisting the Grocery Manager in dealing with, staff with on-going performance issues,

  • Assisting the Grocery Manager with on-going short and long-term staff reviews, helping to identify areas of general improvement, implementing plans for achieving that improvement, then fulfilling those plans.

  • Maintaining the Checkouts to the highest standards, including merchandising of checkout lines, cleaning, magazine & news paper orders and returns, maintaining levels of consumables.

This is not an exhaustive list of your responsibilities, but gives an outline of what to expect from the roll.

This is a full time position.  While the exact hours for this role will be discussed at interview, it should be expected that one weekend day will be required.  The role will necessarily involve some degree of flexibility, to allow you to interact with staff working at all hours of the day.
